New Water Main, Emergency Generators for SCWA
Financed by Drinking Water State Revolving Fund
Construction of vital Suffolk County Water Authority water main replacement projects in Huntington, Noyac and the Fire Island community of Cherry Grove as well as the installation of 52 emergency generators, will be financed by the New York State Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The DWSRF program is administered by the state Department of Health on the state Environmental Facilities Corporation with joint funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New York State.
DWSRF programs operate around the country to provide states and communities the resources to maintain and improve the infrastructure that protects our valuable water resources nationwide.
Details about the projects are as follows:
- Replacement of approximately 5,820 feet of 4" and 6" diameter water main with 12" ductile iron water main on Route 25A between Spring Road and Huntington Bay Road. This water main is more than 120 years old. Increasing the size of the water main to 12" will greatly improve system resiliency, fire protection and water distribution in the Village of Huntington. The water main improvement will allow the Suffolk County Water Authority to more easily move water to areas in need especially during extended periods of power outages where only pump stations with auxiliary power provide the system with water and pressure. This improvement in water mobility is crucial to providing adequate service to critical infrastructure within the Village of Huntington, including healthcare facilities such as Huntington Hospital.
- Replacement of approximately 1,900 feet of 6" diameter water main with 12" HDPE water main between two existing 12" water mains on Bayview Walk in Cherry Grove. Increasing the size of the water main to 12" will greatly improve system resiliency, fire protection and water distribution in Cherry Grove as well as in other communities on Fire Island.
- Installation of approximately 6,520 feet of 12" diameter ductile iron water main on Noyac-Long Beach Road in Noyac. Installing the water main will greatly improve system resiliency, fire protection and water distribution in North Haven and the Village of Sag Harbor. The water main installation will complete a distribution system connection between Noyac and North Haven. Currently, there is only one distribution feed to North Haven across the bridge between Ferry Road and Route 114. The main installation will allow the Suffolk County Water Authority to more easily move water to areas in need especially during extended periods of power outages where only pump stations with auxiliary power provide the system with water and pressure. This improvement in water mobility is crucial to providing adequate service to infrastructure within North Haven and Sag Harbor. Both areas are low-lying areas and are prone to storm impacts such as flooding and storm surge.
- Installation of 52 new emergency generators to provide power at facilities during emergency situations involving loss of power. The catastrophic loss of power due to natural events could simultaneously impact a large portion of Suffolk County Water Authority facilities. The Suffolk County Water Authority has taken mitigating and preparatory steps to maintain safe pressure in the distribution system via back-up power located at approximately half of its pump stations.
