Water main installed on Walnut Avenue as part of an infrastructure upgrade project.

The Suffolk County Water Authority made a major infrastructure improvement in Poquott, replacing approximately 900 feet of aging water main on Walnut Avenue with new, durable ductile iron water main.

As part of the project, an additional 130 feet of ductile iron main was installed to eliminate dead ends in the system, which will improve water circulation and enhance overall water quality for customers in the area.

“This project is a smart, community-focused upgrade that strengthens our system and supports better service for residents,” said SCWA Chief Executive Officer Jeff Szabo. “We’re committed to making improvements that deliver meaningful benefits to our customers.”

SCWA targets areas in its distribution system where water mains dead-end without connecting to other parts of the system. In these locations, sediment can build up over time and impact water quality for nearby customers. While SCWA routinely flushes these dead ends to remove the buildup, installing additional water mains to connect them creates continuous flow, improving water quality and reducing the need for frequent flushing.

Construction was completed in July with final restoration of the roadway expected in several months. SCWA crews are working efficiently to reduce any disruption to area residents during the process.
