Crews perform water main replacement work in Greenport as part of an infrastructure upgrade project.

The Suffolk County Water Authority replaced approximately 3,800 feet of aging cast iron water main along Beach Road, Beach Street and Bay Road in Greenport. The project is part of SCWA’s ongoing efforts to modernize water infrastructure across Suffolk County, with a focus on improving reliability and service quality for customers.

“This replacement will provide residents in Greenport with a more reliable water supply and reduce the risk of future disruptions caused by main breaks,” said SCWA Chairman Charlie Lefkowitz. “Proactive infrastructure upgrades like this are essential to maintaining the safe, consistent delivery of drinking water to customers.”

The area was targeted for upgrades after multiple breaks in the outdated water main. Older cast iron material is susceptible to leaks, especially during the cold winter months. Freezing temperatures cause the ground to shift, placing stress on SCWA’s underground water mains. By replacing it with newer ductile iron pipe, which is more malleable and can withstand shifting ground far better, the likelihood of future breaks is reduced.

The replacement was completed in July, with a temporary patch on the roadways. SCWA will complete a final restoration of all roads in the project area in the coming months.
