plumbing Check the Aerator & Valves

If only one fixture is affected, the issue is internal and not related to the Suffolk County Water Authority water main.

  • Valves: Look under the sink and ensure both the hot and cold supply valves are turned fully counter-clockwise.
  • Aerator: Unscrew the small screen at the tip of the faucet. Sediment often gets trapped here and blocks flow. Rinse it and reattach.

If these steps do not work, you may want to contact a licensed plumber.

water_heater Check Your Water Heater

The Suffolk County Water Authority supplies only cold water to your home. If your cold water is working, the SCWA main is functioning properly.

Your water heater is responsible for hot water pressure. Please check the valves leading into your water heater or you want to contact a licensed plumber for assistance.

valve Check Your Main Valve

Locate the main water shutoff valve, typically found in your basement or utility room where the pipe enters the house.

If you recently had plumbing work done, the valve may have been left closed. Ensure it is fully open (turned counter-clockwise, or parallel to the pipe).

ac_unit Weather & Neighborhood Check

  • Freezing Temperatures: If it has been below freezing, pipes in unheated areas (crawlspaces, garages) may be frozen. You can gently thaw exposed pipes with a hair dryer, or you may want to call a licensed plumber.
  • Main Break: Do your immediate neighbors have water? If not, there may be a main break in your area. Check our interactive map to see if crews are already responding:
