Crews work on Shore Road in Babylon, replacing old water mains with reliable Polyvinyl chloride pipes.
The Suffolk County Water Authority completed an important improvement project in the Village of Babylon, replacing approximately 2,800 feet of outdated and undersized transite water main with new, more durable P.V.C. water main. The project took place on Virginia Road, Shore Road, Edward Avenue and Mortimer Avenue.
This upgrade is part of SCWA’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, reliable drinking water to its customers. Replacing these aging pipes will enhance the distribution of water, improve water pressure and strengthen fire protection for residents in the area.
“Replacing aging water mains with modern materials is essential to ensuring our customers receive the best possible water service,” said SCWA CEO Jeff Szabo. “Our investment in this project will improve system reliability and benefit the community for decades to come.”
“We are grateful for the work SCWA does for our community,” said Village of Babylon Mayor Mary E. Adams. “Improving our infrastructure will ensure reliable service for our residents and is essential to Babylon’s continued growth and success.”
As water mains age, they become more susceptible to breaking, which can flood streets and disrupt service to customers. Water main breaks are especially common in the Southwest Sewer District, which includes much of Babylon Town. Sewer main installation destabilized ground beneath pre-existing water main, increasing the likelihood of breaks even further. SCWA says that this January saw the second most recorded main breaks in a single month in twenty years. Replacement projects like this one decrease the likelihood of service disruptions in the future.
