The Suffolk County Water Authority replaced approximately 5,000 feet of aging water main on East Madison Street in East Islip. The project was part of SCWA’s ongoing effort to modernize its distribution system and enhanced service reliability for local customers.

The project involved the removal of older cast iron pipe and the installation of new ductile iron water main.

"Replacing this infrastructure on East Madison Street was essential for maintaining the high standard of service our customers expect," said Frank Tassone, Deputy CEO for Customer Service, who toured the site. "By installing ductile iron, which is a more malleable material, we put in a system that could better withstand ground shifts and temperature changes, ensuring a more reliable network for the East Islip community."

This project is a key component of SCWA’s wider infrastructure management strategy. SCWA manages 6,000 miles of water main across its entire system, about half of which is still comprised of cast iron. To ensure long-term stability, SCWA replaced approximately 20 miles of water main every year, prioritizing areas with the most frequent breaks to provide the greatest benefit to its customers.

The installation was completed with a focus on minimizing disruption to local service for residents in the East Islip area.
