The Suffolk County Water Authority reminds Suffolk residents to always seek proper identification from anyone seeking to enter their homes claiming to be an SCWA employee.
Two recent reported incidents in Nassau County—one in Bellmore and one in Levittown—reinforce the importance of homeowners taking proper precautions in such incidents. In both incidents, residents reported that a group of men claiming to be water utility workers from the Town of Hempstead Water Department and New York American Water Company respectively asked to enter their homes. Once inside, one of the men would distract the homeowner, while the others would search the house, stealing cash, checks and other possessions, according to police.
Please note that all SCWA employees carry photo identification cards, which residents should ask to see before allowing access to their homes (contractors working for SCWA carry identification cards with the SCWA logo.) In almost all cases, an SCWA employee will not seek entry into a customer’s home without having made an appointment to do so. Additionally, all SCWA employees or contractors working for SCWA will always arrive in an officially marked car identifying them as representing the utility.
Residents with any questions about the legitimacy of someone claiming to be an SCWA employee should call our customer service office at (631) 698-9500 for verification.
