The Suffolk County Water Authority on Thursday began work on a water main replacement on Richland Boulevard in Brightwaters that will improve fire protection for the area and provide bolstered protection against future water main breaks.

“We are committed to making the infrastructure investments that will improve our service and provide both current and future generations of Suffolk residents with the highest quality water possible,” said Suffolk County Water Authority Chairman James F. Gaughran. “By replacing this section of main in Brightwaters, we are continuing our efforts to better serve our customers.”

The Authority will be replacing 1,146 feet of 4” water main with 1,146 feet of 6” ductile iron pipe. The larger size will increase the amount of water that can flow through the pipe, thus bolstering area fire protection. In addition, the new pipe will be far less susceptible to breaks.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York. Serving approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents, the Authority operates without taxing power on a not-for-profit basis.
