The Suffolk County Water Authority is nearing completion on a water main replacement project in Northport that will improve the distribution of water and provide better water pressure and therefore improve fire protection for area residents.
Old water main from Northport Water Works is being replaced with larger, new 6-inch and 8-inch ductile iron pipe. The project, which began on June 12, replaces 1,391 feet of main on Grove Street westerly from existing SCWA water main on Church Street to Johnston Avenue. The replacement continues onto Johnston Avenue, moving westerly, and was tied into existing main on Washington Place and Seaview Terrace.
The Northport replacement project is part of the Authority’s long range plan of replacing aging infrastructure throughout Suffolk County.

"We are always looking for ways we can improve our infrastructure and distribution system," SCWA Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey W. Szabo said. "This project not only provides resiliency, but will improve public safety by making sure the Northport Fire Department has sufficient water pressure to fight fires."
"I am pleased to see the Suffolk County Water Authority taking this type of initiative," added Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William R. Spencer. "Updating our aging infrastructure is so important for our residents here in Northport and across Long Island."
The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York. Serving
approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents, the Authority operates without taxing power
on a not-for-profit basis.
