The Suffolk County Water Authority wants to assure its customers that the public water supply is as safe to drink now as it was prior to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

“There have been various media reports and statements from public officials noting that water supplies in certain areas may not be safe to drink, but it’s important for people to understand that those reports refer to private water supplies,” said SCWA Chairman James F. Gaughran. “If you are an SCWA customer, your water is as safe to drink now as prior to the storm’s arrival. There is no need to stock up on bottled water.”

The one exception is Fire Island, where power was shut off by the Long Island Power Authority on Sunday. Once SCWA workers are able to get back onto to Fire Island, steps will be taken to restore the water supply to SCWA customers living there.

Additionally, despite the power outages impacting the vast majority of Suffolk County residents, SCWA is utilizing emergency generators to ensure that even customers who do not have electricity will continue to have a supply of clean and safe water.

SCWA customers with any questions about their water supply should call our call center at (631) 698-9500.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York. Serving approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents, the Authority operates without taxing power on a not-for-profit basis.
