On Thursday, April 22, 2010, the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) teamed up with students from Hawkins Path Elementary School in the Middle Country School District to plant trees by a water pump station.
“It is important to encourage young people to give back to the earth and understand that they can make an impact,” said SCWA Chairman Michael LoGrande. “It was fitting to have this event on Earth Day to guide them and let them know that they too can help save this planet.”
As part of SCWA’s Pump Station Beautification Program, the students planted 15 trees and bushes donated by the SCWA. The plants include crepe myrtles, Leyland cypress and schip laurel. The students were also given t-shirts, reusable water bottles and plants.
