The Suffolk County Water Authority’s planned second meeting of a ten-year public education initiative focusing on groundwater quality and conservation scheduled to be held at Northport American Legion Post 694, 7 Woodside Avenue, Northport on Tuesday, March 14 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. has been postponed due to the anticipated arrival of Winter Storm Stella.
The initiative, called WaterTalk, will feature SCWA laboratory and hydrogeology staff and offer residents the opportunity to ask questions about any water quality issue that concerns them.
The meeting, when rescheduled, will feature opening remarks from SCWA Chairman James F. Gaughran about what the initiative seeks to accomplish as well as presentations from SCWA Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations Joseph Pokorny, Water Resource Manager Steve Colabufo and Laboratory Manager Christopher Niebling.
"With so much information circulating in public about groundwater quality and the status of the aquifer system that provides all of our drinking water, our goal is to give residents throughout our service territory the opportunity to ask questions directly to our on-staff water quality experts," said Gaughran. "We feel we can help residents better understand what the most significant challenges to our aquifers are and, most importantly, what we can all do to ensure that our aquifers are protected for current and future generations of Suffolk residents."
The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York. Serving approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents, the Authority operates without taxing power on a not-for-profit basis.
