Water Main Upgrade in Westhampton Beach Set to Improve Water Service

The Suffolk County Water Authority replaced approximately 600 feet of outdated cast iron water main on Old Meadow Bend in Westhampton Beach with a larger, more durable Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) water main. The project will address low water flow, improve fire protection, enhance distribution efficiency and increase overall water pressure for residents.

Suffolk County Water Authority Awarded $21.5 Million in Grant Funding for Drinking Water Infrastructure Projects

The New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation announced $435 million in Water Infrastructure Improvement Act (WIIA) grants across 102 projects statewide, funding critical water infrastructure improvements throughout New York State. Among the largest single recipients, the Suffolk County Water Authority has been awarded $21.5 million this year—the largest grant SCWA has received through the WIIA program to date, surpassing its previous record of $21.4 million in 2021.

Fall Drought Leads to Record Breaking Water Demand in Suffolk County

A fall drought has driven Suffolk County water demand to record-breaking levels, typically seen only during peak summer months. The Suffolk County Water Authority reports that it pumped approximately 7 billion gallons of water in October, about 1.5 billion gallons more than usual for the month, following one of the driest months of September and October on record.

This event offers a simple and environmentally responsible way for residents to dispose of unused or expired medications. No sign-up is required—just drive up, drop off your medications, and leave. Note that medical sharps cannot be accepted.

Suffolk County Water Authority Sees Success of Water Conservation Efforts During One of Hottest Summers on Record

Despite one of the hottest years on record, the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) successfully managed water demand without experiencing the stress typically seen during peak summer usage. In past years, SCWA often faced peak demands up to 540,000 gallons per minute (gpm). This summer, however, demand never exceeded 520,000 gpm and rarely surpassed 510,000 gpm.

Two New Advanced Treatment Systems Added to Suffolk County Water Authority System

Two new Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) water treatment systems have been completed and put into service in the Town of Huntington by the Suffolk County Water Authority. These state-of-the-art treatment systems are specifically designed to remove the emerging contaminant 1,4-dioxane from the drinking water SCWA supplies. The new systems treat water from two separate public supply wells on Middleville Road in Northport.
