SCWA Extends Stage 1 Water Emergency

Action Results from Persistent Drought Conditions
Across Suffolk County
The Suffolk County Water Authority today extended its Stage 1 Water Emergency to the entirety of its customer base, stretching from Nassau/Suffolk border to Montauk. The Water Emergency to date had included just SCWA’s customers on the East End.
As has been the case on the East End since early August, all SCWA customers are now strongly urged to stop non-essential water uses and to stop watering their lawns between the hours of 12 a.m. and 7 a.m., when water infrastructure is pushed to the limit by enormous numbers of irrigation timers set to the early morning hours.
The U.S. Drought Monitor continues to place all Long Island in a condition of Severe Drought.
“We are all in this together,” said SCWA Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Szabo. “Everyone needs to do their part to ensure there is sufficient water supply for fighting fires and other emergency purposes.”
The Suffolk County Water Authority is an independent public-benefit corporation operating under the authority of the Public Authorities Law of the State of New York. Serving approximately 1.2 million Suffolk County residents, the Authority operates without taxing power on a not-for-profit basis.
