The primary responsibility of the Assistant Supervising Chemist is to assist the Supervising Chemist in supervising and monitoring all aspects of an analytical area of the Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing testing and developing new test methods as needed. This position reports the statuses of all issues in the area of responsibility to the Supervising Chemist on a regular basis.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist Supervising Chemist in overseeing all aspects of the daily operations of an analytical area the Laboratory, such as Inorganic, Organic or Chromatography.
- Assist Supervising Chemist in supervising the Chemists and Technicians assigned to the area, including prioritizing, delegating and reviewing work.
- Assist Supervising Chemist in reviewing water quality data packages, and notifying Lab management of sample results.
- Develop new testing methods and perform complex testing.
- Produce monthly reports for the methods assigned to the area.
- Oversee and maintain all QA/QC records, including NYSDOH ELAP proficiency testing.
- Assist Supervising Chemist in performing continuing training of the Chemists and Technicians assigned to the area.
- Order and track supplies needed for area.
- Perform instrument maintenance.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of experience supervising chemical analyses required; 5 years of experience in the SCWA Laboratory performing chemical analyses preferred.
- B.A or B.S Degree in Chemistry or a related science with at least 24 Chemistry credits required.
- Extensive knowledge of drinking water laboratory operations, regulations and chemical analyses.
- Some knowledge of federal and state drinking water quality regulations and water system regulations and operations .
- Leadership, supervisory, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
- Proficient skills using LIMS, and the ability to perform technical and scientific analyses of chemical information and data are needed.
- The ability to multitask, make sound decisions, and work well with others is essential.
