Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Lab Manager is to oversee the daily operation of the chemistry, bacteriological and sample receiving areas of the Laboratory. Responsibilities include coordinating work with the Production Control department to ensure water quality issues are addressed. This position reports the statuses of all issues in areas of responsibility to the Director of Water Quality & Laboratory Services on a regular basis.

Description:

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage all aspects of the daily operation of assigned areas of the Laboratory.
  • Supervise and monitor the work performed by the supervisors of these areas, including prioritizing, delegating and reviewing work.
  • Review water quality data and interact with Production Control department to ensure water quality compliance with federal and state standards.
  • Monitor the work performed by the Chemists and Technicians to ensure compliance with NYSDOH ELAP testing requirements, including reviewing QC packages where QC has failed.
  • Oversee the operating budget and recommend capital budget purchases based on the Lab Director’s goals.
  • Oversee the physical operation of the Lab, including scheduling maintenance with Facilities.
  • Supervise and monitor the work performed by the Supervising Chemists, Assistant Supervising Chemists, Supervisor of Bacteriology, and Supervisor of Receiving.
  • Assist the Laboratory Director/Deputy Laboratory Director in monitoring the technical operation of the Lab including QA/QC program to ensure testing performed is conducted in compliance with NYSDOH ELAP regulations.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • B.A or B.S degree in Chemistry or related science with at least 24 Chemistry credits; M.S degree in Chemistry and at least 16 credits of Biology preferred.
  • 15 years of experience as a manager in a large drinking water testing laboratory; 10 years of experience as Assistant Manager of SCWA Laboratory or 15 years as Supervising Chemist preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental science and chemical analyses; drinking water laboratory regulations and operations; water system regulations and operations; and federal and state water quality regulations.
  • Some knowledge of bacteriological analyses is needed.
  • Leadership, management, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Proficient skills using LIMS, and the ability to perform technical and scientific analysis of water quality data.
  • The ability to multitask, make sound decisions, and work well with others is essential.

 

The work week for this position will be Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m, and will also be required to function in an “on call” capacity.
