The Suffolk County Legislature at its meeting Tuesday unanimously approved the appointment of St. James resident Mario Mattera to the Suffolk County Water Authority Board. Mattera will be sworn in at the SCWA Board’s meeting on March 31, replacing Frank Pellegrino, who declined to seek a second five-year term.

Mattera currently serves as business agent for Plumbers Local Union #200 of Ronkonkoma. In that capacity, is trustee for union funds and is responsible for the management of $150 million in pension funds, welfare and annuity. He provides supervision over more than 1,100 members, 80 signatory contractors and 100 general contractors, and has served for the union in various other capacities over the past 20 years.

Mattera also contributes his time to numerous civic efforts. He presently serves on the Suffolk County Workforce Housing Committee; the Consumer Affairs Plumbing Licensing and Fire Protection Board; the Riverhead Empire Zone and Helmets to Hardhats. He also volunteers time for the Long Island Housing Partnership for Hurricane Sandy Relief Program for Boilers & Water Heaters and the Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead.

“Mario brings to the table a tremendous amount of business expertise that will be extremely valuable to us as we continue our efforts to make the Suffolk County Water Authority as lean and efficient as possible,” said SCWA Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey W. Szabo.

“I’m extremely excited to have an opportunity to offer my business skills to a corporation that has made tremendous strides in cutting wasteful spending under the current administration,” Mattera said after the vote.
