High Usage Detected

Your usage is significantly higher than your home's calculated baseline. Let's find out where the water is going.

Leak Detective

The Meter Test

The easiest way to confirm an active leak is by checking your water meter. Ensure no water is currently being used inside or outside your home (no washing machines, sprinklers, or running taps).

Locate your water meter (usually in the basement) and look at the dial. Do you see the low-flow indicator (a small red triangle or star) spinning, or do the numbers continue to increase?

Leak Detective

Isolate the Leak

Since the meter is moving while water is off, you have an active leak. Let's check the two most common culprits:

  • The Toilet Dye Test: Toilets are the #1 cause of hidden indoor leaks. Remove the tank lid and place a few drops of food coloring into the water. Wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, you have a flapper leak.
  • Sprinkler Valves: If you have an irrigation system, check the main control valves (usually outside in a green box in the ground). Look for pooling water or mud, which indicates a cracked valve or failing seal.

Intermittent Usage

If the meter is completely still right now, but your bills are high, you likely have an intermittent leak or a scheduling issue.

  • Irrigation Timers: Double-check your sprinkler control box. A power outage may have reset the timer to a default daily schedule without your knowledge.
  • Sticky Toilet Flappers: Sometimes a toilet flapper only fails occasionally. Listen for a toilet "running" randomly during the night.
