The Suffolk County Water Authority reminds Suffolk residents to always seek proper identification from anyone seeking to enter their homes claiming to be an SCWA employee.
Two recent reported incidents—one in East Islip and one in Bohemia—reinforce the importance of homeowners taking proper precautions in such incidents. In both incidents, residents reported that a man claiming to be from the Suffolk County Water Authority asked to enter the home to check indoor plumbing components because of a problem with water service on the block. In both situations, the residents allowed entry though the man was not an SCWA employee.
All SCWA employees carry photo identification cards, which residents should ask to see before allowing access to their homes (contractors working for SCWA carry identification cards with the SCWA logo.) In almost all cases, an SCWA employee will not seek entry into a customer’s home without having made an appointment to do so. Additionally, all SCWA employees or contractors working for SCWA will always arrive in an officially marked car identifying them as representing the utility.
