The Suffolk County Water Authority this month launched its Aquifer Activist Fun Patch program, a two-hour program geared to scouts in the 2nd through 7th grades. The program guides scouts as they trace the journey of their water supply.
From the aquifer below the land’s surface to the water towers high above, scouts learn all the steps from extracting water from deep underground, making sure it’s safe and delivering to household taps. This knowledge helps motivate scouts to educate others about the unique nature of Suffolk County’s sole source aquifer and the steps we can take individually and as collectively to protect it.
The program is held at SCWA’s new Education Center located on Motor Parkway in Hauppauge. At the program’s completion, each scout receives an Aquifer Activist Fun Patch.
A program geared to high school age scouts will debut in spring of 2018.
