All About Meters

How to read your 5/8" inside residential water meter

The following instructions appear on the back of your printed bill.

  • If your meter is the clock dial type

Follow these rules to convert the readings on dials "A" through "E" into numbers as shown in the example.
Each dial turns in the direction indicated by the arrow. Always record the last number the hand has actually passed.

    Example:

    9

    9

    9

    5

    2

    A

    B

    C

    D

    E

If a dial rests exactly on a number, it has not yet passed that number. Record the previous number for that dial.
